The Second Miler
Leading the Way by Following Christ

Psalm 37:23 - The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in
his way.

According to Dr. John Maxwell, people generally prioritize their lives according to one of five
structures; (1) hard things first, (2) easy things first, (3) loud things first, (4), last things first, or
(5) important things first. Such thinking is usually based on; (1) do the hard things while I am
fresh and have the most time and energy remaining; (2) do easy things first so I can get the
most things done in the shortest possible time and with the least energy; (3) do first whatever
seems to be the most urgent, whatever is calling the loudest; (4) begin today with what I was
unable to complete yesterday; or (5) do what truly needs to be done first, and everything else by
their order of importance. When you stop and think about it, that’s precisely the way the Lord
does it.
So what is it that is most important to the Lord? Galatians 5:6 states, “For in Jesus Christ neither
circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.” If that
statement means anything at all, and it certainly does (it is, after all, God’s Word), and if
Hebrews 11:6 is true in telling us that “without faith it is impossible to please Him (God),” then the
two elements upon which the Lord places the greatest priority is “faith” and “love.” It requires
faith to please God, and faith only works by love. Now add to that Biblical reasoning the truth
that God is “upholding all things by the Word of His power,” which is “settled forever in heaven.”
In the light of Biblical reasoning, it becomes vitally clear that God’s first priority is seeing the “just
living by faith.” That is, the faithful, willing, and obedient eating the good of the land, having their
prayers answered, and demonstrating the blessed Lordship of Jesus and the great love of God
for all men. God always seeks to have light and life demonstrating dominion of darkness and
death. Hence, His first commandment to man; “be fruitful and multiply.” After light and life comes
dominion; “subdue the earth and have dominion over it.” Whatever you face today, speak light
and life into it, and THEN have dominion over it. That’s prioritizing Biblically.
